My name is Narayana.

I was born one month after my father died.

Despite this, I once lived very happily in the Nilgiri Mountains of Southern India. My mother and grandmother took great care of me. They taught me good and true life values.
One day my mother was killed - some say she was murdered - I was moved with her brother my uncle to the mighty city of Mumbai.
We had nothing and lived in the great Mumbai Dharavi slum. We did not even have food. My sister worked as a forced prostitute to fund the debts of others. We spent much of our days searching for food in the piles of rubbish.

Mumbai can be a cruel place.

I ran away when I was young, and made my own way in life. Still scavenging on the streets, but I wanted to make things better for my family. After generations of poverty and struggle - I knew that if I worked hard - I could do it.
I did not know of the hurdles that would be placed in my way.
Of the murder, the betrayal, and the lack of humanity that existed I would need to discover and overcome all of these if my life was to be worth a single rupee.

But ... you know ... It was not all bad - I am able to look around me and see the things in life that count the most – the family and good friends that I can trust.

I am a survivor.

And my story is that of a survivor.
